WWDC 2005: Monday Wrap-Up

As expected, Monday was basically a warm-up day. The three "state of the union" presentations set the themes for the conference. Xcode 2.1 is a big focus, and not just because of universal binary support. There's quite a bit of polish and general evolution in that release. More about that in the next post.

I had a chance to play around with one of the Intel-based Macs last night, and it was a somewhat erie experience. The machine just went about its business. You really have to go looking to figure out that the machine is any different than a typical Mac.

Apple's goal is to make sure the consumer doesn't have to think about the processor. In some ways, this isn't all that different than G4-based Macs that use a Motorola processor versus those that use an IBM processor. Somebody walking into a retail store doesn't care about endianness or instruction sets or vector units. That's the way it should be.

Yes it should be that way. It is clear that the transition is more about moving to processor-independence than plugging an Intel chip in place of a PowerPC processor.

Hi, I wonder if you could tell me the name of a third party application that was used as an example at Apple's WWDC (on the student day I think or maybe in the state of the nation dealing with accessibility), of how assistive technologies can be used in other interesting ways. The application was a screen capture utility, but it used the voice over technology to capture text versions of apple 'events' and place them in a sequenced list of steps, next to the screen captures. Instant step-through tutorials!
I thought I wrote it down...
I have googled, with no luck. Thanks in advance! lovely site and writing... I reminisced about the pics. It was my first time in SF!

I thought it was just a custom internal app written by an Apple engineer, but I could be wrong.
