Late Night Cocoa: Episode 24

I was asked to return to Late Night Cocoa for Episode 24, to discuss what's new in Cocoa for Leopard. This is a big topic and there's no way to talk about everything, but I think there are some topics in there that haven't seen much coverage elsewhere.

We look at improvements in the built-in views, Core Animation, Core Data, Objective-C 2.0, and a lot more. This was a great episode to do because we could finally get into all of the work that has gone into Leopard. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it.

This is also a good time to mention the Mac Developer Network, which is home to several podcasts: Late Night Cocoa, Mac Developer Roundtable and Mac Software Business.

I listened to a bit of the first episode of the MacSB podcast with Gus Mueller and Marcus Zarra, and I'm really encouraged by where this show is heading. The idea behind the podcast is to cover the business side of becoming a professional Mac developer.

The topic for the first episode is Getting Started — and there's some real insight shared. Gus talks about how estimating a project ship date is difficult because you can only guess based on what you think the product will be. As you evolve and polish the app, its identity changes. He gives a specific example of how the user interface for Acorn changed quite a bit from the initial concept to the shipping version.

Hearing this directly from someone who has done it is absolute gold. If you're considering writing Mac software as a job, I strongly encourage you to give it a listen. I haven't checked out the Mac Developer Roundtable show yet, but expect it will be held to the same high standards that Late Night Cocoa is.
