Ad Tolerance Threshold

I was going to read an article linked from slashdot about the quality of computer photo printers relative to professional photo labs, but the second I clicked through, I heard a rapid tapping sound.

Turns out this was an ad that was using audio to try get my attention. I immediately closed the page. Publishers and advertisers, I'm giving you fair warning that any page that does something like this is immediately closed.

Don't get me wrong, there are no hard feelings here. I understand the publisher's need to generate renevue, but there's a threshold of distraction that I'm willing to tolerate. For me, having to deal with peripheral sound while reading makes the thing just not worth it.

Another way to look at this: the harder you work to try to get my attention, the less I feel like I'm going to be interested in what you're offering. If it's worthwhile, I'm going to find out somehow.

If you are using Safari, just use PithHelmet to block stuff like that. Because of ads like that, I uninstalled the Flash plugin entirely. Life is much nicer.

I'm not quite ready to ditch Flash altogether, but I wouldn't rule it out entirely in the future.
