Mac mini

The end of one era, the beginning of several others.

The Mac mini almost seems like a fantasy machine that hobbyist designers mock up in their spare time and think should be priced ridiculously low. Long the reaction was "sure, that'll happen." Yet here we are.

Today ends the era of the $999 barrier of entry to Mac OS X. Now you can have a unix workstation that runs iTunes, Office, iMovie, Final Cut, iPhoto, GarageBand, Keynote, Photoshop, and Apache/PHP/MySQL for $499. It includes a world-class OS and an umatched development environment.

Today also ushers in the era of a new look for Apple software boxes. Presumably the idea is to make things like iLife more approachable to casual consumers. Also a number of interesting things about Tiger came to light. Dashboard has clearly seen a revamp since earlier builds. More on all of this later.

Forgot to mention. Keynote coverage crown clearly goes to MacTeens overall. They did an amazing job.

I personally can't wait for the influx of devs to Mac OS X. I wrote a short bit about it since it was the first thought that hit me when I saw the machine, it can be found at http://matrixpointer.com/karl/?p=17
