Safari Support for AmEx Job Applications

This story on MacNN talks about how Mac users who attempt to apply for a job at the American Express site are told that "the system does not support Mac environments." The question is, why doesn't it?

Some people reported being able to file an application online using Safari or Internet Explorer for the Mac, while others encountered glitches, according to a report from News.com. American Express uses a company called BrassRing to manage its online job applications; however the firms' software doesn't support Macs at this time.

BrassRing claims to be releasing a newer version in December, however, that will be Firefox-compatible to support Mac users, according to the report.

People. It's the web, and it's 2005. It's not like you need to port the web site to something. Write using standards, and practically everything that works on Firefox works on Safari, which works on IE. For that matter, it should probably work on Opera and maybe even Konq. With few exceptions, there's no reason that you should need to block out entire operating systems. In fact, Safari is, in many cases, well ahead of Windows IE.

Amen to that. I convinced my place of employment to drop their "if it's not IE, it's not for me" diatribe a couple years ago. There is absolutely no reason for any web-based app to require a specific OS.

I thought I had made a point about standards, but just the other day I was informed that we'd settled on WMV as a streaming format. When I pointed out we could use streaming server I was rebuffed: It's too expensive. Although it's free, we employ only two Unix-capable nerds among 200 disposable MSCEs.

I didn't bother to point out the folly in that.
